President Biden expressed his administration's dedication to the long-standing friendship shared by the United States and Nigeria. He lauded the efforts of the Tinubu administration in driving economic reforms within Nigeria.
According to an official statement published on the White House website, it reads: "President Biden welcomed the Tinubu Administration’s steps to reform Nigeria’s economy and thanked President Tinubu for his strong leadership as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States to defend and preserve democracy and the rule of law in Niger and the broader region."
The statement also highlighted Nigeria's invitation to the G20 summit as recognition of its pivotal global role as Africa's largest democracy and economy.
President Tinubu attended the two-day summit on a special invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as reported by The PUNCH. He was accompanied by key ministers, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment.
President Tinubu engaged in bilateral discussions with leaders from Germany, South Korea, and India. During his meeting with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Tinubu emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive economic alliance beyond a mere financial framework. He expressed the government's efforts to introduce incentives aimed at attracting major manufacturers like Volkswagen to establish operations in Nigeria to stimulate economic growth.
In response, the German Chancellor acknowledged the mutually beneficial nature of strengthening economic ties with Nigeria. He expressed his intention to visit Nigeria in October to further advance these initiatives.
Following his departure from New Delhi, President Biden is set to have a meeting with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates during a technical stopover in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.
