The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dauda Biu, has clarified that all FRSC personnel are prohibited from entering the vehicles of traffic offenders during seizure.
According to a statement released by FRSC spokesperson Bisi Kazeem, Biu made this clarification in response to a memo that had been misinterpreted. The memo in question, issued to commanding officers, aimed to end the practice of having patrol operatives sit inside the vehicles of offenders during impoundment.
Kazeem explained that the original directive, dated September 12, 2023, with reference FRSC/HQ/OPS/94/VOLXVI/094, was titled: 'Immediate ban on the placing of staff in offenders' vehicles to escort for Impoundment.' However, this directive was misunderstood as a complete ban on vehicle impoundment by the corps.
To set the record straight, the Corps Marshal's directive only banned the practice of placing staff inside offenders' vehicles to escort them for impoundment by patrol teams. Vehicle impoundment for traffic infractions remains in effect.
The FRSC expressed regret for any confusion caused by the earlier memo and affirmed that the current stance of the corps aligns with the clarified directive.
