Since the commencement of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, NATO, the Transatlantic military alliance, has been providing extensive support to Ukraine economically, militarily, and politically. While Ukraine has expressed its long-term goal of joining NATO, the alliance has maintained that the war must come to an end before Ukraine's admission can be considered.
Stoltenberg emphasized in an interview with Germany's Funke media group, "Most wars last longer than expected when they first begin. Therefore, we must prepare ourselves for a prolonged conflict in Ukraine."
He added, "We all hope for a swift resolution to the conflict. However, we must also acknowledge that if President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people cease their resistance, their nation will cease to exist. If President Putin and Russia relinquish their weapons, peace can be achieved."
