UK Warship Anchors in Nigeria to Combat Illicit Maritime Operations

On Sunday, the United Kingdom (UK) Royal Navy warship, HMS Trent, made its arrival in Lagos with the aim of bolstering Nigeria's efforts to combat sea-based criminal activities.

During its stay in Nigeria, the Royal Navy will provide valuable capacity training and maritime assistance to address challenges such as sea piracy and illegal trafficking.

HMS Trent's Commanding Officer, Tim Langford, emphasized the significance of this visit as an opportunity for collaboration between the UK and Nigerian navies. He stated, "The Royal Navy has a longstanding history of engagement in this region and maintains a strong partnership with the Armed Forces of Nigeria. This visit allows the Royal Navy and the Nigerian Navy to collaborate in identifying potential solutions for maritime security and countering threats at sea. We are here to collectively learn from the experiences of different nations and share these insights."

Jonny Baxter, the UK Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, underscored the importance of a secure maritime environment in facilitating trade, investments, and prosperity between the two nations. He stated, "Nigeria holds a pivotal role as a valued defense partner for the UK in West Africa. Both our countries face shared threats, and we are eager to collaborate with Nigeria in overcoming these challenges and enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea."

Notably, in 2021, HMS Trent was also present in Lagos, where it conducted maritime security patrols and provided support to partner navies in West Africa. This ongoing collaboration reflects the commitment of both the UK and Nigeria to safeguarding their waters and fostering regional security.
