UNILAG Reduces Tuition Fees Following Dialogue with NANS

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially reduced its tuition fees following a meeting with representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday, September 14.

According to a statement released on Friday, September 15, the university engaged in discussions with NANS executives and faculty members to address concerns related to the tuition fee increase.

The statement explained, "Authorities of the University of Lagos led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, on Thursday, September 14, 2023, had a meeting with the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu accompanied by top officers of the Association and UNILAG Faculty leaders drawn from nine faculties of the University and College of Medicine."

During the meeting, Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, the President of NANS, outlined the students' demands, which included a request for the reversal of mandatory fees, hostel fee reductions, and the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government at UNILAG.

Following a careful review of the issues raised by both students and the university administration, the following agreements were reached:

1. Utility Charges for all categories of students were reduced to N15,000 from N20,000.

2. The obligatory fees for new undergraduate students were adjusted from N126,325 to N116,325 for courses without Lab/Studio, and from N176,325 to N166,325 for courses with Lab/Studio.

3. The obligatory fees for returning undergraduate students were revised from N100,750 to N80,750 for courses without Lab/Studio, from N140,250 to N120,250 for courses with Lab/Studio, and from N190,250 to N170,250 for Medical/Pharmacy students and students in Health Professions.

4. The Convocation Fee to be paid by all final year students was reduced to N27,000 from N30,000.

5. Hostel fees were reviewed as follows:
   - For undergraduate hostels in Akoka and Yaba campuses, the fees were reduced to N43,000 from N90,000.
   - For hostels in Idi-Araba campus, the fees were reduced to N65,000 from N120,000.
   - The fees for Sodeinde Hall were reduced to N135,000 from N250,000.

This decision follows protests by some UNILAG students who expressed their discontent with the initial tuition fee hikes announced by the university management. In July, UNILAG authorities had justified the fee increases by citing the current economic conditions.
