According to the report from CNN, the Gaza Strip is teetering on the brink of famine, warns Martin Griffiths, the United Nations' top emergency relief official.
In a stark report released by the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Griffiths describes Gaza as "a place of death and despair," highlighting tens of thousands of casualties, attacks on medical facilities, and a shortage of functioning hospitals.
As Gaza faces its gravest humanitarian crisis, Griffiths emphasizes the dire public health situation with overflowing sewers and the spread of infectious diseases in overcrowded shelters.
Amidst the chaos, approximately 180 Palestinian women give birth daily.
"Gaza has simply become uninhabitable. Its people are witnessing daily threats to their very existence — while the world watches on," laments Griffiths.
Sadly, Rocket attacks persist on Israel, over 120 individuals remain hostage in Gaza, tensions escalate in the West Bank, and the specter of regional spillover looms dangerously.
With fears of a broader Middle East war heightened by incidents involving Iranian proxy groups, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's current visit to the region underscores the urgency.
Interestingly, Griffiths urges all parties in the ongoing conflict to adhere to international law, protect civilians, and release hostages promptly, calling on the international community to exert influence for these critical actions.
"We continue to demand an immediate end to the war, not just for the people of Gaza and its threatened neighbors, but for the generations to come who will never forget these 90 days of hell and assaults on the most basic precepts of humanity," implores Griffiths.
"This war should never have started. But it’s long past time for it to end," he adds, echoing the urgent need for resolution.
