Ekpa, who holds the title of Prime Minister of BRGIE, made this announcement on Sunday via his official X handle.
This statement follows recent support from South-East governors, lawmakers, regional groups, and Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for Kanu’s release as a means to achieve peace in the region.
However, BRGIE, under Ekpa's leadership, cautioned these governors and leaders against engaging in such negotiations, asserting they lack the necessary legitimacy.
Ekpa emphasized that BRGIE is the sole entity with the legitimate authority to call for Kanu's release and Biafra's declaration. He accused those attempting to negotiate Kanu's release of undermining Biafra’s liberation efforts.
"Selfish politicians and traditional rulers who are now advocating for negotiations with Nigeria, after previously sabotaging Biafra's liberation, are warned to cease their actions. This warning will not be repeated; none of you have the mandate to speak for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or Biafrans. We will not permit any further negotiations from tonight (Sunday). The Biafra Republic Government in Exile remains the only legitimate entity to engage in such matters. Those individuals now taking center stage and calling for negotiations should step aside," Ekpa declared.
The call for Kanu’s release gained media attention last week following a meeting of Southeast governors in Enugu State. In a communique read by Governor Hope Uzodinma on July 3, 2024, the governors resolved to meet with President Bola Tinubu to seek Kanu's release.
Previously, in May, Ekpa had urged the Nigerian government to engage with Finland for mediation to resolve the conflict in the region.
