According to the report from Vanguard, The Kano State Hisbah Board has officially distanced itself from Idris Ahmed Gama, an officer found promoting LGBTQ rights.
Board chairman, Daurawa, issued a stern warning to NGOs supporting LGBTQ causes, urging them to halt their operations in Kano State. He also confirmed that disciplinary measures would be taken against Gama, with his case being referred to the board's disciplinary unit.
In his defense, Gama claimed ignorance regarding LGBTQ issues and apologized for his actions, seeking forgiveness from the Hisbah Board.
Earlier reports had shown Gama in a video, where he discussed his personal journey and evolving understanding of LGBTQ matters.
"My initial encounter with this topic was quite shocking," Gama admitted, reflecting on his first exposure to LGBTQ issues.
"However, after encountering it again, I've come to see that LGBTQ individuals are human beings deserving of respect and dignity," he continued, indicating a shift in his perspective.
Gama emphasized the need for inclusivity, stating, "I now see them as my sisters and brothers."
Commenting on recent Hisbah reports regarding LGBTQ matters, Gama commended their thoroughness and stressed the importance of equality: "We are all human and deserve equal treatment," he stated, addressing the disparities in how people are treated.
Using a familial analogy, Gama criticized unequal treatment: "Mistreating one group while favoring another creates gaps and perpetuates injustice," he said, calling for a fair and equitable approach.
When asked about the treatment of LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria, Gama advocated for equal respect and consideration: "They should be treated with the same respect and consideration as any other Nigerian," he said, expressing confidence in Hisbah's commitment to inclusivity.
Gama also called on lawmakers to review existing laws: "Our legislators need to consider amendments to ensure equal rights for all Nigerians, including LGBTQ individuals," he urged, stressing the necessity of legislative reform.
Expressing gratitude to event organizers, Gama acknowledged Hisbah's role: "I thank the organizers for allowing me to represent Hisbah, an organization that values inclusivity," he said proudly.
"This is a significant milestone, and I am honored to be part of this advocacy," he concluded, underscoring the importance of ongoing efforts towards equality.
