In line with the report from the Tribune, the Nigeria Police Force addressed reports concerning the alleged raid of the National Headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commonly referred to as 'Labour House' in Abuja.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police clarified the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the statement, the police were pursuing a "prime criminal suspect" linked to an ongoing investigation, who had been traced to a shop located within the building in the Central Business District of Abuja.
The statement detailed that detectives, equipped with the necessary legal authorization, conducted an operation at the specified location, which happened to be within the NLC building.
The operation, described as well-coordinated and lawful, was aimed solely at apprehending the suspect—a foreign national alleged to be involved in multiple criminal activities across Nigeria and other African countries.
The police statement emphasized that the operation had no direct connection to the NLC, its Secretariat, staff, or leadership. The focus of the operation was strictly on a rented shop within the building that the suspect was using as a front for his criminal endeavors. The NLC Secretariat itself was not the target of the police action.
Furthermore, the Nigeria Police Force called for the cooperation and support of the NLC leadership in the ongoing investigation. The statement underscored the importance of this investigation, noting that the high-profile nature of the suspect poses a significant security risk to Nigeria and other African nations.
The police reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law, maintaining professionalism, and respecting human rights in carrying out their duties.
The NLC had earlier accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of conducting a raid on its National Secretariat, an allegation that was quickly denied by the DSS Spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunaya. The police statement sought to clarify the situation and ensure that the public understood the true nature of the operation.
