In line with the report from The Sun newspapers, Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of numerous Nigerians during the #EndBadGovernance protests. In a statement released on his X account, Obi acknowledged the sacrifices made by those who died striving for a better Nigeria.
He emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and expressed his hope that the legitimate demands of the protesters would be addressed to foster national improvement.
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. These individuals, who perished in their quest for a better nation, are deeply mourned," Obi stated.
Obi urged the protesters to avoid violence and maintain good behavior, highlighting that building a new nation cannot be achieved through destruction. He also called on security agencies to act with civility while protecting lives and property during the protests. "I earnestly hope that their lawful demands will be met. I continue to encourage the protesters to be peaceful and avoid violence. We cannot build a new nation by destroying what we already have," he added.
Obi expressed his belief in a brighter future for Nigeria, where issues such as hunger, poverty, insecurity, corruption, and mismanagement of public funds would become history. He envisioned Nigeria as a leading example of human and national development. "May God grant eternal rest to the deceased and quick recovery to the injured. A New Nigeria remains possible," Obi concluded.
In addition to addressing the protests, Obi condemned recent threats against the Igbo community in Lagos. The "Igbo must go" hashtag that surfaced online has elicited intense reactions, prompting the former governor to speak out against such divisive rhetoric.
Obi warned that such language threatens the unity of the country and violates the constitutional rights of citizens. "Deeply disturbing, I have read genocidal threats on X against the Igbo tribe, calling for their relocation. Let me pointedly warn that such rhetoric threatens our unity and is fundamentally opposed to our Constitution," Obi stated.
He called on authorities to take immediate action to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind this agenda.
Additionally, he urged Nigerians to stand united against any form of divisive rhetoric. "We must resist any attempt to divide us. Unity is our strength, and we must protect it at all costs," Obi emphasized.
